Adult Literacy Program

Riverside County Library System Adult Literacy Program provides FREE adult reading and writing services to adults 16 years or older in our communities through one-on-one and group reading and writing tutoring, English Language classes and family literacy events.

The program is supported by funding from the California Library Literacy Services, the California State Department of Education, Riverside County, private organizations and businesses in our communities, and through the generous support of our many volunteers throughout the County.

Volunteer Program

Our programs are made possible through the generous support of our volunteer tutors, who are providing invaluable service to our Riverside County communities.
Next to the adult learner, the tutor is unquestionably the most important person in the literacy program. There are a few ways to become a literacy volunteer:

Adult Literacy: As a volunteer reading/writing tutor, you are the pivotal force in the literacy program's design to enable adult learners to improve their reading, writing, digital and other crucial skills.

English Language Classes: As a volunteer English Language tutor, you are the driving force to providing free and accessible English classes to non-native English speakers that helps learners improve job readiness skills as well as better connect with the community.

Family Literacy Events: As a volunteer for Family Literacy, you are providing adult learners, potential adult learners and their families vital early literacy and parent engagement support and strategies, which is shown to increase a child’s academic and life-long success.

We believe that your decision to become a volunteer tutor will be personally rewarding. Most experienced tutors have told us they believe they have received as much from the program as their adult learners. In this endeavor, Literacy Service staff are always here to support and assist you in any way we can. Please contact us whenever necessary.

Family Literacy Program

Our Family Literacy events and programs provide literacy awareness, tools, and resources to adult learners, potential adult learners and their families. Our program hosts one-time, once-a-month, and 6-week workshops to engage learners and their families in literacy at different libraries and off-site locations throughout the Riverside County.

This program is made possible through funding from the California Library Literacy Services, Riverside County, and private organizations and businesses throughout our communities.

Career Online High School

We are proud to offer the Career Online High School diploma program as part of our literacy services. This program is a 100% accredited online diploma program that provides scholarships for qualifying candidates at no cost to the student.

This program is made possible with support from the California State Library and funding from Riverside County.

English Language Classes

As part of our Adult Literacy Program, we offer English Language classes at various library locations throughout the County. These classes are designed to provide free and accessible English classes for non-native English speakers to improve their English-speaking skills for job readiness and lifelong success in the United States.

Walk In Tutoring

Currently only at our Literacy Department headquarters located next to the Louis Rubidoux Library, we offer 15-20-minute walk-in tutoring sessions for resume building, computer help and other reading-related and writing-related activities.
